Impacts of Changed Ice-Ocean Stress on the North Atlantic Ocean: Role of Ocean Surface Currents

چکیده
The importance of considering ocean surface currents in ice-ocean stress calculation the North Atlantic Ocean and Arctic sea ice is investigated for first time using a global coupled ocean-sea model. Considering weakens Ekman pumping by about 7.7 15% over Ocean, respectively. It also significantly reduces mechanical energy input to ageostrophic geostrophic currents, mean eddy kinetic reducing conversion rates baroclinic barotropic pathways. Furthermore, strength Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), Nordic Seas MOC, subpolar gyre are found be reduced considerably (by 14.3, 31.0, 18.1%, respectively). weakened AMOC leads 0.12 PW reduction maximum northward heat transport, resulting loss lower temperature Ocean. This shrink extent an attenuation thickness. These findings highlight properly both components on circulation climate studies.

North Atlantic surface-ocean control of Pleistocene deep-ocean circulation
Deep basins of the North Atlantic were occupied by a cold 13 C-depleted (nutrient-rich) water mass during glaciations, and a warmer 13C-enriched (nutrient-poor) water mass (modern NADW) during interglaciations. This mode of deep-water variability is related directly to migration of the North Atlantic Polar Front. Down-core stable isotope records from the Atlantic and Antarctic suggest that 13C ...

The Makran Coast (Iranian Coastline of the Oman Sea on the Northern Indian Ocean) plays an important role in country’s future navigation and trade due to its accessibility. In 2014, the Iranian Makran coastline was selected by the PMO to be studied as the Phase 6 in the series of Monitoring and Modelling Studies of Iranian Coasts with all disciplines being in investigated including currents. Al...
متن کاملOpen ocean dead zones in the tropical North Atlantic Ocean
Here we present first observations, from instrumentation installed on moorings and a float, of unexpectedly low (< 2 μmolkg) oxygen environments in the open waters of the tropical North Atlantic, a region where oxygen concentration does normally not fall much below 40 μmolkg. The low-oxygen zones are created at shallow depth, just below the mixed layer, in the euphotic zone of cyclonic eddies a...
متن کاملOn surface drift currents in the ocean
A new model of surface drift currents is constructed using the full nonlinear equations of motion. This model includes the balance between Coriolis forces due to the mean and wave-induced motions and the surface wind stresses. The approach used in the analysis is similar to the work by Craik & Leibovich (1976) and Leibovich (1977), but the emphasis is on the mean motion rather than the small-sc...
متن کاملNitrous oxide in the North Atlantic Ocean
In order to get a comprehensive picture of the distribution of nitrous oxide (N2O) in the North Atlantic Ocean, measurements of dissolved nitrous oxide were made during three cruises in the tropical, subtropical and coldtemperate North Atlantic Ocean in October/November 2002, March/April 2004, and May 2002, respectively. To account for the history of atmospheric N2O, we suggest a new depthdepen...
